Community Stock Breeding

Written by

The Administration Council of the community and the rural mentor oversee the community ranch together. This ranch is very important for the community because it is the main pillar of their economy. The income generated by this branch of the economy is retained until June, when it is built into the budget for the following year – either for investment or for spending. The maintenance of the ranch also has a high priority, since it is the base of the economy of that community. Without it, there is practically no income and few people would find work in the community.

After the first official phase of immunization against aphthous (a hoof- and mouth disease) in 2017, the number of animals was at 12.233 heads. But it is important to emphasize that the real number is at 15.300 animals. This number includes the family farms (5 farms) and the agricultural school “Escuela Agricola La Huerta” (ASCIM).

The community with the most animals now is Pozo Amarillo with 1.594animals and the community with the least animals is Ebetogue with 300 animals.

All the work on the ranch is done by community members themselves. The method used is the breeding of one year old calves, and not the fattening of bullocks. In other words, in all the communities they sell these twelve to fourteen month old calves, and not the bullocks. This system works well with the situation of the communities, since most sales are finished by May, so that the income can then be calculated into the plans made in June with the budget and for the next year of production.

There is a constant effort to increase the quality of the calf meat, which in fact, is actually already very good. It is important for the indigenous community to be known as good quality ranches, so that people would prefer to buy from them.

For the indigenous people it is important to have a relationship with their clients, and they value someone taking the time to have a conversation with them.
